BMS Department

This year, B.Sc. Honours Biomedical Science is completing ten years! The course was introduced in the University by Acharya Narendra Dev College in 1999. Though ten years is not a long period in the life of a department, but is definitely a significant one. The department has gained a prominent status and distinction of offering one of the most promising undergraduate course in the country. The course is an excellent springboard for students wanting a career in research or in industry. The diverse experience that students receive, prepare them for the evolving arena of biomedical sciences. The success rate of our students getting selected for Masters programmes (in sciences and in management) in the best institutes in the country and abroad has been phenomenal! Recently, the course syllabus has been thoroughly revised keeping the growing demand of students trained in inter-disciplinary sciences, in research institutes and in biotech & pharma industries. The restructured syllabus is likely to be introduced from the new academic session, this year.
Teaching and research activities :We pride ourselves in the excellence of our academic program and offerthe highest quality of education to our students. Teaching is friendly and interactive; group discussions andhands-on training are the mainstay of the course. Students are groomed to express themselves (both in writing as well as in oration) in an effective manner. Students are encouraged to think for themselves and plan experiments creatively. Regular assignments, presentations and seminars are mandatory for each student. Thrust is on peer learning and working in collaborative teams. Great emphasis is laid on individual hands-on training. We are proud to inform that BMS students at ANDC, under the guidance of Dr. Urmi Bajpai, participated in a multi-institutional project- "A Virtual Centre of Excellence for Coordinated Research on Tuberculosis: Development of alternate strategies", funded by DBT. Students in the past two years have PCR amplified and cloned genes of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) and hence have contributed to an international repository of gene clones of Mtb. The training not only gave students an opportunity to work in the most modern, well-equipped, air-conditioned labs in the college, but also has given them an insight in to research and also helped them transform into independent researchers and methodical workers.

Summer Projects It is mandatory to undertake Summer Projects for second year honours students in various reputed research institutes, universities, and pharmaceutical companies where they are assigned an independent project. The training gives students sound exposure to current techniques and methodologies employed in the area of biomedical science and help them shape into independent researches.
